When a capacitive touchscreen receives a touch signal, it converts the touch data into electrical pulses and transmits them to the touchscreen controller IC for processing. The signal is first amplified by a low-noise amplifier (LNA), then passed through analog-to-digital conversion and demodulation, and finally sent to a digital signal processor (DSP) for further processing.

Capacitive touchscreen typically consist of M + N physical capacitive sensors (M columns and N rows). These sensors are arranged in a grid pattern to form M × N capacitive sensing points. When a user's finger approaches the touchscreen surface, the capacitance at the corresponding sensing points changes. The distance between the sensors (i.e., between adjacent rows or columns) is usually a few millimeters, which defines the physical resolution of the touch panel.

The coordinate system of the capacitive touchscreen module is completely different from that of the LCD module. The LCD module's coordinates are based on its resolution. For example, a WVGA screen has a resolution of 800×480, meaning 800 rows with 480 RGB pixels per row. Each coordinate can be precisely located by the pixel points in the X and Y directions (x, y). In contrast, the capacitive touch panel determines its coordinate system based on its physical sensor layout in the X and Y directions. Therefore, a proper mapping method between the two coordinate systems must be established to ensure accurate touch input and output.

As a result, the DSP in the touch controller IC must map the touch data from the capacitive panel's coordinate system to the pixel coordinate system of the LCD screen. This ensures that the point touched by the user corresponds exactly to the intended point on the display.

Additionally, to maintain touch coordinate stability, the controller IC must further process signal jitter, which may come from finger movement or noise in capacitive data. By analyzing changes in coordinates, the IC dynamically adjusts the filter coefficient of the low-pass filter, achieving smoother and more stable touch point output.

Finally, before sending the data to the host, the system must use software to analyze the touch data and determine the function of each touch. This includes identifying the size, shape, and position of the touched area on the screen. If necessary, the processor groups similar touches together. When the user moves their finger, the processor calculates the displacement between the start and end points of the touch to support gestures like swiping and dragging.
